Week 4: whatUseek Directory and Guest Posting

I’ve been met with quite a bit of resistance since cracking the top 10 in Google for Atlanta web designers.  I just checked my rankings on the SERPS.com rank tracker, and I’ve fallen a few notches even though my organic visits have increased 62% over the last week.

You can see in the following screenshots that I’m not telling a lie.

I’m now in the teens (meaning the 2nd page) for some of my tracked keywords. So, I’ve fallen a few notches, but my traffic has increased drastically. What did I do to have caused this?

Submit My Website to the whatUseek Directory

This directory was put into the same group of directories as DMOZ, Yahoo, Best of the Web, and GoGuides. These are some powerful directories, and since whatUseek was put into the same category, I figured why not? whatUseek has a Google PageRank of 6 and an Alexa rank of 2311 at the time of this blog post.

I’m not so sure if Google PageRank even matters anymore. My website had a Google PageRank of 5 in 2010, but I received very little leads online. Right now, Mr. Technique is a Google PR2 website, but I get way more traffic and leads than I did in 2010.

Submission to whatUseek cost me $49.99 and I submitted to a relevant category with an objective description. I submitted my website on November 3rd, and it was approved 5 days later. You can see my whatUseek listing here.

Guest Post on a Blog

I’ve put a lot of thought into my About Me page. Everybody in my field offers web design and SEO services, and an About Me page is my place to set myself apart from my competition. I’ve met other freelance web designers in the Atlanta area that told me that they knew who I was before I talked to them. One web designer even told me that he used my website and content as inspiration for his website. I’ve gotten many inquiries because my visitors liked what I had to say about myself. I was even chosen to be interviewed by Entrepreneur.com (see article) because of what I had to say on my About Me page. I guess you can say that I think an About page is important.

Traffic Connection (a company offering similar services to me) allowed me to post my thoughts on the important of  having an About page (see post). At the end of the post, I was able to have a link back to my website. Traffic Connection got free content, and I got another relevant backlink to my website.

My traffic is at an all time high, but I want that #1 ranking in Google!
