A Solution for the “Oops, something went wrong” Gmail Error
I’ve been using Google Workspace since 2010, and I’ve been managing Google Workspace accounts for just as long, but I had never encountered this error before. One of my client’s staff members had told me that they couldn’t send an email from her computer because of a window would pop up that said “Oops, something went wrong; Recent changes may not have been saved.”

I had never seen this error before, so I did a Google search for the error, and I found a few results, but none of them had a solution. Then, I asked ChatGPT about the error, and it provided some solutions such as:
- Checking the account storage to see if the user was using 100% of their storage
- Temporarily disabling Gmail Labs / Experimental Features
- Clearing out Drafts
- Temporarily revoking third-party app access
- Use Incognito or Private mode
- Checking Gmail’s “Offline” Settings
- Checking Google Workspace Admin Console for any service disruption
None of these proposed solutions solved my problem, so I contacted Google Workspace support. In the beginning, I was getting similar responses to ChatGPT’s responses. I had to produce a couple of HAR files and screen recordings for Google’s tech support.
After a couple of weeks of chatting with Google and replying to support ticket emails, Google finally responded with the cause of the “Oops, something went wrong; Recent changes may not have been saved.” error! It was the logo image being used in the email signature! These were Google’s exact words:
A potential cause of the persistent error (#2002) is the presence of an image within the email signature. It has been determined that Gmail does not support for signature images in Data URI format. Attempting to send emails with such image will result in the message failing to send and the error message ‘Oops… the system encountered a problem (#2002)’ appearing.
That explained why my client’s staff member could still send emails through her phone! The email signatures saved in Gmail’s desktop app aren’t used in Gmail’s mobile phone app (iPhone or Android).
After I removed the logo, the error message stopped coming up. With that being said, in my Gmail desktop app, I do use an image in my email signature, and I’ve never had any problems.
Anyways, if you’re tried all of the other solutions for the “Oops, something went wrong; Recent changes may not have been saved.” problem and haven’t solved it yet, give this solution a shot.
